To the Grove

Good Morning!

I trust that you are doing well. We had a great service this past Wednesday night. Travis Hartman spoke and did a fantastic job speaking on the wrath and love of God. The students are really responding well and growing in their walk with Christ. Next Wednesday, we are having a BIG night at the Grove. We are doing WOL Takeover. The WOL drama team from Florida will be with us performing some dramas. Also, Brandon Arnold (WOL worship leader at camp in Florida) will be leading worship. Brian Baker (WOL missionary) will be speaking for us! We have challenged every student to bring 1 student with them next week so let’s pack the place out. Please be in prayer for the night.

Remember, regional teens involved is tomorrow! I understand that the JR/SR is tonight for Union Grove. I also understand that the prom at North is tomorrow night. So, we have a lot going on this weekend, but please inform me if your student will not be in attendance. I am expecting everyone to meet us at 9 am at the church to ride over together. There is a mandatory meeting at 9:30 am at Piedmont. I am attaching a schedule for you to follow. All students must be there 30 minutes before their competition. Also, we will need everyone attending to be in the choir as well. So, make sure you are dressed and ready to go this Saturday. If you have not paid your Regional T.I. fee, you can bring it Saturday morning. Don’t forget it. Also, bring $6 for lunch on Saturday as well. We are looking forward to the weekend, see ya there.

Our upcoming events are as follows:

  • April 29-30 – Regional Teens Involved – Regional is held at Piedmont Baptist College. On Friday, April 29, the only competition is quizzing. On Saturday, everyone else will be competing. We will be riding over together so we will leave Union Grove at 9 am. There is a mandatory meeting for everyone at 9:30 am. Also, you will need to bring $6 for lunch money on Saturday. Also, if you have not paid your Regional T.I. fee ($15), you need to bring it Saturday morning!
  • May 18 – Last night of WOL. This will be our last night of WOL for the school year, but don’t worry; Summer Sizzlers will begin on Wednesday, June 1st in the fellowship hall!
  • May 25 – Baccalaureate at Union Grove. We will not have the Grove on this night. All students will be in the main service supporting our seniors!
  • May 29-30 – Operation Getaway – This is our end of the school year overnight retreat. This is going to be awesome. Operation Getaway will be held at Victory Mountain Camp in Sophia, NC. It is about 1 hour away. We have rented out the entire camp for just our group. It will be 2 days of nonstop fun! Some of the activities include: fishing, swimming, paddle boating, soccer, basketball tournament, kayaking, canoeing, water games, capture the flag, and much more! The cost is $36 per person. This includes all of your meals, lodging, and activities. We will leave Union Grove at 1 pm on Sunday, May 29 and return at 6 pm on Monday, May 30th. We will have our church service at the camp on Sunday night. I understand that this is graduation weekend, and Memorial Day weekend, but I seriously want you to consider sending your students to this event. You can bring friends to this event. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. We are taking signups for this event now. Hope you will join us.
  • June 1 – Summer Sizzlers begins in the fellowship. Summer Sizzlers will be a Bible study that we will hold in the fellowship hall for all going into the 7th grade through graduating seniors. The service will begin at 6:30 pm. We hope to see you there all summer long!
  • June 11 – WOL Camp Golf Tournament. You can view the golf tournament flyer on our website (ugbconline.com). You can also download the flyer and the sponsorship information. Honestly, if you work hard on raising money for this tournament, you can pay your camp payment off quickly. I encourage the students to find businesses to sponsor. You can also find people to play for you. You will get $32 directly to your camp expenses if you can get someone to play for you. The cost will be $75 to enter the tournament. The tournament will be held at Olde Homeplace Golf Club. I encourage you to go ahead and begin working on this! All students attending camp will be assigned a time to work on this day as well.

I hope that you are keeping up with what is happening at Union Grove. We love and appreciate you. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime.

Online Quiet Time

We live in a very computer generated society. Honestly, if my computer crashed, I would be in serious trouble. We rely on them constantly. The average adult spends about 2 hours a day on the computer. The average student spends over 4 hours a day on the computer. That is insane. It is not going the opposite way either, people are increasing their computer time. Social networking sites are so popular right now. There are over 500 million active facebook users. Word of Life local church ministries has launched the online quiet time. It is an opportunity to do your devotions with God online. First you create an account. You will set up a profile just like other social sites. Then, you can add friends, etc. The coolest thing is you can do your quiet time with God online. It has several commentaries for you to look at as well as versions of the Bible. You can write about it in the journal portion. Also, there is a prayer request page where you can submit your prayer requests, and your friends can pray for your needs. When they click that they have prayed, a notification comes to you to inform you that your need has been prayed for by…What a great tool. Check it out today, and I encourage you to get on board with it!

Easter Recap

“He is Risen…” Those 3 words changed the course of mankind. They changed eternity and life. On a personal note, those 3 words changed my life! We just celebrated those 3 words yesterday all across the world. I love reading on twitter about all of the churches in America who made Jesus known big in their cities this Easter. I love Easter. I get super stoked around Easter, because it is a time to celebrate Jesus resurrection. The resurrection seperates us from other religions. It defines who we are. We serve a risen Savior! We serve a Savior who conquered sin, hell, and the grave!

The problem is that we should celebrate this event every day. A day should not go by ever where you do not spend time thanking God for resurrecting! Too often though many…many days go by where we forget about it. Every Sunday should be a HUGE Sunday, because we get to celebrate the resurrection of our Savior! Let’s not just focus on this event one time during the year, but rather daily let us send our praises to God for His glorious resurrection!

I agree though that the church should capitalize on this time of year for reaching the lost. We certainly did at Union Grove. We had about 700 people attend our morning services! That is one of our largest services….EVER! We were so thankful to the guests that visited us, and for our people inviting them! Thanks guys. We just enjoy sharing Christ’ love with new people. It was great. We shared the complete gospel through the doctrine of justification. We also saw several follow the Lord in believer’s baptism Sunday night for baptism! Praise the Lord. It was awesome. God showed up and made Himself known.

Easter Invite

This Sunday, we will celebrate the most important day in the history of the world. That is the resurrection of Jesus Christ! I cannot wait. We are putting a specific emphasis on evangelism and outreach this Easter. We want to do whatever it takes to see people come to new life in Christ! It is no secret that people are more receptive to an Easter invite than any other church invite throughout the year. 8 out of 10 people say yes to an Easter invite! That is unreal. That is why we must take advantage of this special day and get people under the sound of the Gospel. It is then that God can get a hold of their life and change their heart.

Who are you inviting to church this Easter?

A letter from Pastor Josh to the Grove

Good Morning!

I trust that you are doing well on this Friday morning. Many of you are probably off of work enjoying the day. It is a huge weekend for believers as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the thing that separates us from other religions around the world. Our God is RISEN! We are planning on a big day Easter Sunday morning, and if you do not have a home church, we would love for you to come and check out Union Grove. We will have two worship experiences (9 am & 10:45 am) for you to choose from. Come check it out.

We have been doing a series on Wednesday on Sin. WOL has challenged us to study the doctrines of Sin, Salvation, and Man. I have been encouraged to see students making life change decisions each night. I love seeing students at the altar getting things right with God and others. It is great to see students bringing their friends to the altar to pray. We have also seen about 8 students accept Christ as their Savior over the last 2 months so praise the Lord for that!

Well, summer is about here. Can you believe it? Summer is the slow time for student ministry, right? WRONG! Actually we are busy about all of the time throughout the year, but this summer, we are super busy. It shows by the long list of announcements you will find below. We understand that it is a lot, and we want to keep you as informed as possible. You can also view these announcements on our website (ugbconline.com).

Our upcoming events are as follows:

We will be riding over together so we will leave Union Grove at 9 am. There is a mandatory meeting for everyone at 9:30 am. Also, you will need to bring some lunch money for the day.

“Work Out” your Salvation

Philippians 2:12 says, “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own Salvation with fear and trembling.”

I want to blog about that phrase, “work out your own Salvation.” Let me just say up front, this does not mean work for your Salvation. It says, “work out.” Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.” We are saved by God’s grace through our faith in His finished work. We do nothing to get Salvation, and we do nothing to keep Salvation. Rather what Paul is saying to the church at Phillipi is to live out their Salvation. They need to make God known through their Salvation. In practical terms, “live what you say you believe.” Live life a Christian! Don’t be hypocritical.

I want to challenge you today to live out your Salvation. If you have been saved through the Gospel, make it known. There is a lost world around us dying for answers, and we have the answer that can radically change their life. The problem is that we are not working out our own Salvation. We think it is only for the pastors and missionaries, but this is for every follower of Christ!

Let’s make His name known big in the cities in which we represent!

Come spend Easter with us

This Sunday, you are invited to Union Grove Baptist Church for our Easter celebration. Easter is this Sunday, April 24. We have two specific worship experiences for you and your family. The first one begins at 9 am and the second one begins at 10:45 am. The services are the same so you can choose which one best fits your scheduled. Here is a personal invite from our Pastor:

How to deal with our Sin

We are doing a series on Wednesday nights about dealing with sin in our lives. We all sin. In fact we were all born into sin because of Adam and Eve’s sin. So, you and I were born with a sin nature. When we accept Christ into our lives, we are now given a Spiritual nature. The old nature has not gone anywhere though. The difference is that with the new Spiritual nature, we can overcome the old nature. In I John 2:15-16, we find the three causes of sin in the believers life.

  1. The lust of the flesh.
  2. The lust of the eyes.
  3. The pride of life.
The devil uses each of these in our lives. He has a knack for making things look, feel, and sound good when they are bad. We all sin. I will sin today, and probably tomorrow. The key is how do we respond when we sin. The response should be confession.
I John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
The response we should have toward our sin is that of confession. We must confess our sin right when we are convicted of our sin. The word confess carries on a stronger meaning than just to admit. It is admitting the same thing about. It is calling sin, sin. Confession is coming clean with God about one’s sin, rather than denying or attempting to ignore known sin. Ultimately confession is seeing sin as God sees it. When you do this sincerely, God takes over. He is then able to do what He promised, and that is to forgive and cleanse you. He will always forgive. He cannot do anything but forgive! Then, He will erase it and wash you clean. No sin is too great for God to forgive.
So, as you go about the day, remember that “Man’s confession of sin leads to God’s forgiveness of sin.

How to see Easter visitors return to your church

Hal Seed pastors the New Song Community Church in California. He blogged recently on how to keep Easter guests returning. This weekend most churches will have a huge amount of visitors visit their campus. Is this the only time that they visit during the year? Here are some helpful ways that Pastor Hal blogged that you can apply to your guests this Sunday to keep them returning after Easter:

1. Prepare for Them.
When my wife and I invite guests to our home, we always plan for them. What would make them feel comfortable? How can we add value to them? What would they enjoy doing with us?
Our church’s plans are by no means perfect, but for Easter, we try to think through all the obstacles that could discourage a visitor from returning, and all the actions that could increase this likelihood. For instance, we know that the church’s parking lot will be full, so two weeks in advance we start asking regular attendees to free up spaces by parking in the business park adjacent to us. Most of our guests will need directions on where to go once they arrive, so we add extra parking lot greeters, front door greeters and lobby hosts. (We train them by having them role-play ahead of time. We ask our greeters to be friendly, but notoverly friendly. Visitors like to be welcomed, but not accosted.)
Our visitor plans also include additional chairs and additional services. We change the configuration of our auditorium to accommodate the maximum number of chairs. We add overflow venues to our two largest services so everyone is ensured a seat, no matter how many people show up. Some of the guests we want to invite are out of town that weekend, so we hold a service on Wednesday night; it empowers our members to invite these folks to dinner and then to church.
We know that most of our visitors won’t know our usual music, so we keep the worship songs upbeat and easy. We typically sing, “Christ the Lord is Risen Today,” because almost all CEO’s know it. (After all, they sang it somewhere last Easter). We also incorporate some type of multimedia into the service—since “the medium is the message,” we try to keep that medium as relevant and familiar as possible. It helps us speak in the language our visitors understand.

2. Pray for Them.
Before talking to our friends about Jesus, we want to talk to Jesus about our friends. Seven weeks before Easter, we pass out “7×7 Cards” to the congregation, asking them to write down the names of seven friends they want to see come to Christ on Easter. We build a replica of the Jerusalem Wailing Wall and mount it on our stage. Each member gets two cards: one to keep, and one to pin on the Wall. Every week from then until Easter, the Wall reminds us that we’re praying together for our unchurched friends.
Holy Week was the most important week on Jesus’ calendar, and I believe it ought to be the most important one on ours as well. So, since it’s hard to invite seven friends to one service and care for them all, I personally ask from the pulpit for members to consider attending multiple services, bringing a different friend to each one.

3. Connect with Them.
Easter guests are savvy. They know that churches put on their “best show” at Easter, so no matter how great your services are, your Easter guests are unlikely to return to what undoubtedly will be a “lesser show” the next weekend. What might get them back?Relationships. Events can draw people, but relationships draw them back. At our church, we concentrate on building relationships with guests in four ways.
(1) Our staff and key volunteers work the lobby before services. They watch for people invited by our regular attendees as well as people who just look disoriented. A smile, handshake and a sincere question or two are a good start to both a good first impression and a potential friendship.
(2) I try to connect personally with as many visitors as possible. I do this by offering them a free book at the end of the service. Just before the closing prayer, I’ll say, “I know some of you have questions about God. I want to offer you a free copy of a book called The God Questions. As soon as we’re done, I’ll be right down in front with copies. I’ll even sign one for you if you’ll promise to read it.” Twenty or thirty people usually seek me out for this offer, and it gives me a chance to shake their hand, look them in the eye and say, “So, you have questions about God?” This takes us to a fairly intimate level of conversation and enables me to conclude with, “You know, if you’re serious about getting your questions answered, you ought to come back next week. This is a really good place to explore your questions about God.” This single action has done more to increase Easter and Christmas retention than anything else we’ve tried in our church’s 16-year history.
(3) People don’t like to cook on Easter Sunday as much as they once did, so after each service, just outside our front doors, we serve a barbecue. Tables and chairs are set up with the aroma of hot dogs and burgers wafting through the doorway. We let a local grocery store cater the meal so we can concentrate on building relationships. Church leaders circulate among the tables introducing themselves, while regular attendees enjoy the feast and intentionally sit at tables with people they don’t know. The connections don’t go deep, but it breaks the ice and starts guests thinking about the church as a place to make friends rather just a place to attend services once in a while.
(4) On the Monday and Tuesday following Easter, a team calls every guest, thanking them for attending and inviting them to join a newly forming Small Group. Anyone who accepts this invitation is seamlessly linked into the church family as they become friends with the members of their group.

4. Give Them a Reason to Return.
In the early years, I would script the same format for every Easter service: I’d preach the Resurrection, give an invitation and invite people to return the following weekend for a new series. It didn’t work very well. Less than one-third of those who received Christ ever returned.
Six years ago, we decided to participate in Rick Warren’s 40 Days of Purpose Campaign. The campaign was designed to begin on Easter, so I followed Rick’s script (instead of my normal one) and announced that we were doing something a little different this Easter: we were starting a new series. I preached Rick’s message, gave an invitation and invited people to join Small Groups and to come back the next weekend for the rest of the series. It worked! A record number of guests enrolled in groups and became part of the church. We’ve followed this pattern ever since.
Now, every Easter, we give people a relevant reason to return. I preach the Resurrection and give a salvation invitation, but the message is slanted towards whatever topic we’re heading into the following week. To be effective, the topic needs to tap into a strong felt-need by a large number of attendees. This year, we’ll launch a series on family, a topic with broad and immediate appeal. So instead of talking just about Jesus, I’ll devote the Easter message to Jesus and His influence on His family: His cousins James and John, His mother Mary, his brothers James and Jude and other extended family members. Our church also just produced a feature length motion picture called To Save a Life, so we’ll incorporate the theme of the film and title the series “To Save a Family.”
I don’t believe we’ll set attendance records the following weekend; as I said before, our once and twice-a-month people probably won’t be there. But many visitors will join Small Groups and return to church because they want and need the help that this series has already begun to offer them. Basically, instead of a 30-second announcement at the end of the service, I will have spent the bulk of the Easter sermon showing them why they ought to return.
Service clubs like Rotary and Kiwanis spend as much as one-third of every meeting selling the benefits of attending the next meeting—and these are highly committed members who will be fined if they don’t attend! Personally, I want to outperform the local Rotary Club! In 2 Corinthians 5:11, the Apostle Paul says that “Since… we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men.” During Easter week, I’m going to be trying my best to persuade lost people to come to Christ. At the same time, I’m going to try my best to persuade CEO’s to come back, so that I can further persuade them to become mature Christ-followers and part of His body, the church.
Pastors, I am under no illusion that you and I will persuade every guest to return following Easter Sunday. But these people have chosen to visit us—in effect, they have invited us to take our best shot at changing their lives. Enticing them to return is one of our greatest opportunities as well as one of our greatest challenges. We need to use every tool at our disposal. I’m convinced that good plans, fervent prayers and relational connections, together with a relevant series that visitors have already sampled, are some of the best tools available. May God bless your efforts this Easter!
